A very exciting interview to start the week… with one of my favorite London based designers, Mary Katrantzou! I spoke to her about her designs, social media and her collaboration for Topshop! can’t wait for her AW12 collection…
Mary’s collection is available at S*uce! http://www.shopatsauce.com
-Mary! I am obsessed with your designs! Growing up, did you always know you wanted to be a designer?
I was always creative but never thought I would be a fashion designer. I actually started by studying architecture at Rhode Island School of Design before transferring to Central Saint Martins after my second year, to study Textile Design. It was only in my last year at the BA and then my subsequent MA that I used my prints for fashion. I received allot of support after my graduation collection and so decided to set up my own label. It all happened quite organically.
-over the past year, you’ve had a range of women all around the world wearing your designers – I’d love to know, who is the Mary Katrantzou girl?
I don’t have a specific woman in mind when designing. Women of all ages find something appealing in my work and it’s so flattering to see them in my designs. I design for women who appreciate art and design and who value uniqueness.
– you seem to be quite active with social media – I have been keeping up with your tweets! What do you think of twitter?
I find it a great tool to connect with so many people in the industry and to stay informed in real time. It’s also amazing to hear what people think of your work in such a direct way. I really am influenced by the feedback I get on twitter- good or bad!
-Do you read fashion blogs?
There are a few that I like to read regularly. I don’t have that much free time but I try to stay informed. I always read what they write after our show though- it’s really constructive!
-I am in love with what I saw at the Topshop SS12 press day – any exciting collaborations you can share with myfashdiary readers?
I’m so happy you liked our Topshop sneak peek! We are really excited about the launch of the capsule collection in February! We also have a collaboration launching in January with Longchamp. We designed three different prints for their Pliage and Tote bags, inspired by “East meets West”. I am really proud of the work we did together and can’t wait for the launch during Paris Couture at Colette!
