This week, I spoke to Singer and songwriter, Kate Nash. In between her touring and having just launched her new song ‘Underestimate the girl’, which is a celebration of women (video above), Kate spoke to Myfashdiary on her quirky style, the music industry, her inspirations, blogs and London!
-Hi Kate, when did you know you wanted to be a part of the music industry?
When I first started doing gigs in 2006, I knew that I wanted this to be my life and career instead of just something I did just for fun.
-What inspires you when song writing?
My friends, my family, basically any kind of relationship I have with anyone – my emotions, being happy or sad, feeling angry, the extremes, wanting to change the world, wanting to make someone laugh/smile/feel better.
Wanting to escape. I like to tell stories.
-What is London’s best kept secret?
E.Pellicci on Bethnal Green Road and the Vintage Emporium on Bacon Street.
-Your style is so much fun! How do you get dressed before going out?
It really depends on what kind of mood I’m in, like for example if I feel defensive and nervous I might wear all black and a leather jacket and fishnets and try and look like a bit of a badass, or if I’m sad and bummed out I might wear a nighty and a cosy jumper, if I’m happy it will be colourful and have some kind of humour. I like accessories like hats, hair bows and clips. I either dress like a granny or a 7-year-old or like I’m in a film. I think basing your outfit on a character can really help figure out what you want to wear.
-Do you read blogs?
I like Stylerookie and Rookiemag and Girls Get Busy and also girlgangzine.
-When touring, do you get nervous? what calms your nerves?
I think my routine before taking stage – hair, make-up outfit, helps me feel confident. My sister and my bandmates, listening to the music I love to get pumped up, getting texts from my mum like ‘don’t let the bastards get you down’ all help.
-What are your summer plans?
Probably going back to LA to finish writing with Willow Smith, which I started last month, she is so cute and cool and an inspiration. I would like to spend some time in New York and to maybe have a holiday with my family and dogs, cause I haven’t in ages.
