Golden Union Fish Bar – A retro fish & chips diner-style restaurant in the heart of Soho, which offers a variety of freshly made-to-order traditional fish.  Whenever having visitors in London, we always get the same question: “Where can we have good traditional English fish & chips?”  However, I don’t think any of us ever had one answer in mind, well unfortunately at least we never did.  Golden Union is in such a practical location between Oxford Circus and Tottenham on Poland Street, so it would be super easy to reach after a long day of shopping on Oxford or Regent street.

I think what amazed us the most was the variety of fish to choose from: Cod, Pollock, Haddock, Plaice, Rock Salmon, and the Special Coley (as well as Scampi and Battered King Prawns).  When deciding on what to drink, I was drawn to the American-looking milkshake board above me on the wall so I ended up ordering a Chocolate Milkshake; and just as I was hoping for, it wasn’t too heavy to have alongside my food.  For our main food dishes we decided to go with the popular Haddock & Chips, as well as the Scampi & Chips (breaded shrimp).  The haddock was white, tender and flakey from the inside, and crispy and firm from the outside.  The chips were also crisp, and not too oily.  What is a good classic fish & chips dish without some homemade tartar sauce and mushy peas?  Ordering these was a no-brainer as it altered the taste of the plate completely.

Surprisingly this time we were too stuffed for dessert as the portions were quite large (although we ordered the smaller portions!) – so you can be sure that you will be fully satisfied when hungry!  But if you’re eager to have some dessert, they offer many flavors of ice creams and milkshakes.

No worries if you’re not so much of a fish fan, since they offer a range of traditional English pies such as Steak & Ale, and Chicken & Mushroom.  Also if you’re not up for eating-in you can always take the food to go which is quickly freshly made on the spot!

Perfect for: A casual day out with the urge of having freshly made traditional fish & chips.
