What is Radio Frequency?

Radio Frequency has been a treatment that people have been doing for years – whether on the fact or body. This year, there’s been quite some hype around RF, so I got my skin guru, Rebecca Treston from Euromed clinic to talk us through what it is, the benefits, and if it’s really worth it

Like everyone, I worry about the effects of ageing on my skin. However, often the traditional anti-ageing treatments can feel like drastic options that involve surgical procedures and long recovery times. Always on the look out for non-surgical but effective possibilities, I discovered Radio Frequency and was intrigued. An anti-ageing treatment that offered all of the revitalising benefits but with none of the invasive side effects, I soon turned to my skincare guru Rebecca Treston to get her expert insight on this skin treatment:

To put it simply, Radio Frequency lifts and tightens the skin without any surgical involvement. With more and more people reluctant to go under the knife for aesthetic surgeries, a facial treatment like Radio Frequency allows us to target the effects of ageing on the skin without damaging the skin’s surface. So what is the science behind this treatment? Radio Frequency is a fascinating and innovative method of skin revitalisation, and uses electric current technology to penetrate deep into the skin and stimulate the underlying tissue.

The treatment is effective in three different ways:

Thermal Energy – The main component of the treatment is thermal energy, which is delivered deep into the dermal layer of the skin. This then works to tighten the skin by promoting the production of collagen, as well as increasing oxygen and nutrients to support the skin’s natural regenerative processes.

Stimulation – The Microcurrent then stimulates through a massage-like motion, which helps to keep the epidermis healthy and promotes blood flow for a healthy ‘glow’.

Enriched Oxygen – Through the emission of enriched oxygen the skin is naturally cleansed. This component of the therapy helps combat the negative effects of pollution on the skin by reducing the appearance of large pores, and results in a smoother and more evenly textured skin surface.

This FDA approved treatment offers a completely non-invasive face-lift using proven scientific technology. Its benefits to the skin are numerous, with results visible immediately after your first procedure. So what happens during the treatment? A flat plate of metal may be placed under the back to work as a conductor for the energy emitted during the procedure, before a handheld device is then massaged over the face in circular strokes. There are two different types of Radio Frequency treatment available. Monopolar, or Unipolar, has only one pole attached to the device and will require the use of a grounding pad (metal plate) to complete the electrical circuit. Whereas, Bipolar has two or more poles attached to the device. The use of multiple poles, or electrodes, means that the current circuit begins and ends on the device and so no grounding pad is required.

After only 60 minutes the initial results are clear to see, but for maximum benefit it is advised that you receive a further five treatments over the course of six months. With zero damage to the skin’s surface, Radio Frequency requires no downtime and is a safe alternative to the more invasive procedures associated with facial rejuvenation. Skin will feel tighter and look smoother almost immediately, with the treatment fitting easily into your day-to-day life.
