Ideal for… a new Japanese spot in Dubai, hailing from South Africa
Restaurant name and location: Wakame, Sofitel Downtown Dubai
Cuisine: Japanese
Atmosphere: I visited Wakame two weeks after it first opened, and the first impression I got when walking in is that the space is quite large. A few tables were lunching leisurely while we were there, and I’ve since heard that the evenings are getting quite full.

What they say: The Wakame culinary experience explores the tastes and traditions of Asia with a menu prepared by our masterful team of expert chefs and set within a contemporary yet evocatively inviting space located within the Sofitel Downtown Dubai.
Anchored around the sushi and dim sum counters that immediately catch the eye upon entering, imaginations will wander towards the Far East watching our chefs work with the freshest authentic produce, culminating in a range of signature dishes using traditional techniques and ingredients reflecting the best of Asia. Dining at Wakame will evoke all five senses, introducing an exciting combination of textures and flavors, from small sharing plates to large plates and exquisite desserts.
With our dedicated bar area, we offer an exuberant selection of beverages, each of which yields its own unique story. Our resident DJ will set the mood for after hours socializing, with our service reflecting true Asian hospitality; promising our guests a truly unforgettable experience!

What to order:
-Butternut and feta dumplings (really interesting, so good)
-Lobster tacos (like a lobster roll in a taco)
-Rock shrimp tempura
-Wagyu beef burgers (juicy)
-Wagyu beef sushi (an interesting mix to your typical maki)
-Mochi (they are made in-house and have flavors ranging from mango and coconut to red bean and green tea.)
-Chocolate fondant (with a centre of green matcha)

Service: Wakame have the sweetest staff, who were very involved throughout our experience, which is always great, and especially when the restaurant is new.

What I loved:
-The desserts are all gluten free.
-The chefs are from NYC and South Africa.
-The interiors are very hip and super cool — I can imagine it would be a great night spot.

Bill for two: AED450
