One of the most stylish New Yorkers (in my opinion), DJ Harley Viera-Newton, who plays at most of the fashion parties recently collaborated with Judith Leiber on a clutch collection exclusively sold on Modaoperandi.com. FYI The trunkshow has ended but they are taking special orders! I spoke to Harley on how the collaboration came up, her beauty recommendations and her favorite NYC spots!

-how did your collaboration come about with Judith Leiber?

I’ve been a fan of Judith Leiber forever – I would see women using the bags at events and loved them so much. They’re so intricate and beautifully made and come in such a variety of fun shapes. So finally I reached out and asked if I could possibly borrow the bags myself, and then the relationship grew from there.

-The collection is very Egyptian inspired. Why is that?

I studied Egyptology in college and have always been so inspired by their incredible culture and history. And for years I’ve been on the search for the perfect little pyramid clutch bag, but it just didn’t seem to exist. So I approached the JL team and put the idea of an Egyptian themed capsule out there, and they loved it! And from the pyramid clutch we expanded it to a three piece capsule, including the hieroglyphics bag and Niles the snake. I was involved in the entire process from picking out the shape of the molds to the selection of the crystals. The rectangular clutch actually says “Harley Judith Leiber” in hieroglyphics.

-Most people would associate JL clutches as very fancy, yet you have a very cool, no fuss style. How will you be wearing them?

I think the beauty of a JL clutch is that each one is a little piece of art and completely makes an outfit. So you can wear a really simple black dress and carry one of the bags and instantly you are dressed up in a very unique way. But I’ve also found ways to dress the clutches down, to use them in a more playful way. I carried their bedazzled tiger to a fashion show once and paired it with a simple skirt, flats, and a loose casual jacket. I think a lot of people think you can only wear them with a gown and heels – but I actually think the opposite.

-Talking about bags, what are beauty products you swear by and can’t leave home without?

Mac Ruby Woo lipstick, Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream, Stila liquid eyeliner, Cle de Peau concealer

-Lastly, what are 3 of your NYC hangouts that you recommend to myfashdiary readers?

The Smile, Happy Endings, Jane Hotel rooftop, and the Bowery Hotel
