I remember walking around Dubai Mall and seeing posters that Katsuya was opening soon, and being so confused about it. I know Katsuya from LA, a celebrity favourite which feels more like Zuma with a lounge, bar, dark lighting so I couldn’t imagine it opening inside a shopping mall. Once it opened, I had to go and check it out. Let me tell you, it ain’t anything like LA – atmosphere and restaurant wise but the food is so good – it’s probably better than the one in LA. Restaurant name and location: Katsuya, Dubai Mall

Cuisine: Japanese

Atmosphere: I went there on a weekday for lunch, it was PACKED – the outdoor seating with this weather was just lovely. Great lunch atmosphere, and I can imagine it would be the same with the fountain view for dinner.

What they say: Featuring the dynamic pairing of Master Sushi Chef Katsuya Uechi and design impresario Philippe Starck, Katsuya by Starck is truly a feast for the senses. With specialty cocktails, unique rolls and spectacular sushi and sashimi platters, Chef Uechi skillfully translates Japanese flavors to the American palate. Signature dishes include Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna, Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeño and Miso-Marinated Black Cod. With superb talent and exacting precision, Katsuya by Starck is changing the face of Japanese cuisine.

What to order:

-Soft Shell Crab

-Mozarella and crab tempura (delicious, feels like japanese fried cheese sticks)

-Black cod

-Seaweed salad (crunchy and refreshing)

-Sushi (really good sushi)

-Chocolate lava cake (sweet and moist)

Service: Their manager is from Katsuya LA (which I always like… to get the original feel of the restaurant) and our waiter, Ashraf was hilarious and great with recommendations.

What I loved:

-The refreshing towels they bring once you arrive that smell great.

-That downtown view.

-The vast range of refreshing juices and ice teas including a tasty Orange Blossom ice tea.
